Here comes another LGBT forbidden love story. We had “Brokeback Mountain”; we had “Moonlight”; we had “Carol”; we had “Call Me By Your Name”; now we have “Disobedience” starring Rachel Weisz and Rachel McAdams. The big twist: Christians are not the bigots this time — now it’s the Orthodox Jews.
The trailer for “Disobedience” (cliché much) throws out every conceivable stereotype that has become a staple of films like this ever since Jake Gyllenhaal screamed to Heath Ledger, “I wish I knew how to quit you!”
Not even the film’s trailer captions were given the dignified treatment of poetic diction: “A community secluded by religion,” “a woman exiled for a transgression” are just two examples amidst the flurry of glowing (and predictable) sound bites of critical acclaim that the entertainment writers could have cut and pasted from last year’s review of “Call Me By Your Name.”
“A transfixing consideration of love, faith, sexuality, and freedom,” wrote The Hollywood Reporter. “A beautifully tense tale of forbidden love,” wrote Vulture.
